Georgia Scholastic Chess Team/5 Information and Rules:

During the school year there are many opportunities for players to participate on their school team in competition with teams from other schools in addition to many individual tournaments. The team competitions seem to create more fun and less stress.

This is a team(5) competition by schools. The annual fee is $1/player to the GCA. There is usually a $25 fee for each team at Region and State. Teams must qualify to come to the State Championship Tournament by placing high in their Region Tournament. Players must participate in at least 2 open scholastic G/30 tournaments of at least 3 rounds in regular season or get a waiver from both the regional and state directors to be eligible to play in either a regional or state championship. Teams of 5 from the same school compete starting in September. A school can have as many players participate in competitions as desired.

The season with Regional Championships have been ending in late January with our State Championships in late February or early March. We are planning to move these events about a month later for tournaments in future years.

In Metro Atlanta, Athens, Columbus and in the Brunswick/Southeast area there are Fall and Spring Leagues that start in October and go into May. In all of the team events players must play in order of strength as proven against players from other schools. How good one is at school or what their USCF rating are never the main factors. We currently play at a G/30 time control. How a player performs in the open G/30 scholastic tournaments should be the main factor to determine board order. All rules of chess apply, but the region and state directors have the right to make decisions in addition to the normal rules of chess. The first tiebreak for the Team/5 competitions will always be Head to Head if it is possible to use. We will also use the winner on the highest board as a tiebreak when 2 teams tie.
